Vitamin C, the unsung hero

Vitamin C, the unsung hero

In the discussion of vitamin C is my favorite in particular. Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is part of the water-soluble vitamins and can be found in many food sources. Ascorbate (ascorbic acid ion) is essential for a range of metabolic functions in the body. A deficiency of this vitamin known is the disease called scurvy.

Scurvy has been widely eliminated in this country even though I still see in poverty in countries affected by nutrition is a constant battle, and also in certain animal feeding inappropriate or breeding habits.

The vitamin C gained notoriety for its antioxidant effects in the body. An antioxidant is a substance which, in essence fighting free radicals that are in excess in the body and returning the body to a natural state of homeostasis. When the body has an abundance so-called free radicals is said to be in a state of oxidative stress. The production of free radicals which require a chemistry lesson, but simply free radicals or reactive oxygen species are formed by the normal metabolism of human and other things like smoking, pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides.

In normal circumstances the body can handle stress oxidative metabolism occurs with normal, however, if the body lacks target = "_blank" anti>-oxidants or free radicals are in excess, can cause damage. There are also diseases associated with oxidative stress, disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic inflammatory diseases and diabetes are among those listed.

Vitamin C is also known for its effects positive effects on immunity and the prevention and treatment colds and flu. This vitamin reaches all areas within the body at the cellular level, and serves as our main ingredient of connective tissue collagen. Was also known as a combatant, whether neoplastic and treatments against cancer, specific types of cancer causing large amounts of oxidative stress.

People who smoke are older consumers, alcohol and diabetics tend to require more vitamin C than the average adult in good health. It is also important to note that, because vitamin C is absorbed by an active transport system and is excreted by the kidney may reach a saturation point and its best to take several doses throughout the day and not much time.

Vitamin C has cardiovascular benefits well, studies have shown to have preventive effects against atherosclerosis. Vitamin C can prevent this plaque formation by inhibiting changes oxidative low density lipoprotein (LDL) Vitamin C is also shown to prevent platelet aggregation, reduces cholesterol, and protect the area against coronary heart disease.

The recommended dose varies among individuals and because of the use. The current contribution Nutrition Recommended (RDA) for vitamin C, 75 mg for men 90 milligrams for women, and an extra 35 mg for smokers, is based on the amount Vitamin C necessary to prevent a person from getting scurvy and provide body stores for about 30 days, with a margin of safety. This is of course much lower than what a half-tablet contains Vitamin C, which typically run around 500-1000mg. This recommendation wrong and in my opinion, only focused on the person of perfect health with perfect eating habits. New studies suggest taking 2500mg vitamin C daily for 5 doses throughout the day can reduce cardiovascular risk by 55%.

There was also some concern in taking mega doses of vitamin C and the risk of kidney stones and iron deficiency. All were unfounded. The only side effect reported was gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, which can be combated if you choose a product C as the stomach of friends like Esther C.

The advantages of the enormous power of vitamins are phenomenal a real need for all subject to oxidative stress, or those who want to protect the body from free radicals.
