Take Your Vitamin, But Do not overdose on them

We all know people who go to the local health store like GNC or High Health to get their supply of vitamins. They often go to these places because they feel or even know that they can get a better grade of vitamin there than the local drug store or supermarket.

While this is not a bad idea, a lot of the vitamins sold in health stores near much too high a dose per tablet or capsule. Sometimes it's just people who believe more is better, but all too often they are buying the mega-dose vitamins in the beckoning of sales people working there to recommend them.

Long ago the U.S. government set rules as to the proper level vitamin and mineral people should take no more than help prevent overdose. Many people think that assessed the level is too low, and believe it is better to take a higher dose than what is recommended. The question is, is it safe to do?

Of course it is a good idea to take vitamin and mineral supplement, but as it has always been, still it is recommended that you take as much of your vitamins and minerals from whole food sources. This is not a good idea to think a poor, food should not be made for simply by taking a handful of vitamins and mineral tablets. While it is true that it is hard to get of all the vitamins and minerals you need daily food from alone, vitamin and mineral pills are only meant to fill small gaps, not completely replace them.

When the Food and Nutrition Board of the Academy of Sciences set the recommended daily allowance for each vitamin and mineral, has been made based on studies determined how much of each vitamin and minerals our bodies need and how much we can reasonably get from food. It was determined that taking extra vitamins and minerals within the recommended guidelines are safe.

It is important to take vitamins and minerals because aside from being necessary for normal body function, it is essential to fighting disease and helping to heal many ailments. Some people believe that they can prevent cancer, stop aging, ease arthritis, and help many other conditions with vitamins. Billions of dollars are spent on vitamin and mineral mega-dose taken with the belief that they can treat many of their ailments.

There are many people who think that the RDA's should be increased because they believe that the current recommended dose is too low. Recently, the RDA of some vitamins and minerals are increased, such as vitamin C. However, the Food and Drug Administration has not been too eager to increase the RDA of others because there are studies showing that taking more is not better. In fact, taking too much of some vitamins and minerals are both can cause a toxic buildup as well as a mineral imbalance in the body.

Taking vitamin E and more than 1000mg for example increasing the risk for possible bleeding. always it is believed that taking mega-doses of vitamin C can cure a cold and even prevent cancer. The FDA nevertheless believes that too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea. There are also studies conducted since to indicate that if you take too large a dose of anti-oxidants while being treated for cancer, you may be feeding the cancer cells, making them resistant to chemotherapy.

The best way of getting vitamins and minerals supplements are staying within a moderate dose. This means that you do not need the "super huge mega sized" multi-vitamin pills often sold in health stores. There are plenty of multi-vitamins sold in health stores in good, moderate, acceptable levels of vitamins and minerals content.

Also remember, when the sales people working there who try to sell you outrageously big vitamin pills, they are doing so because of the vitamin is usually more expensive and will take a higher commission. The vast majority of people working in health stores will not have any degrees or certifications's in any area of nutrition and therefore NOT eligible to determine how much of any vitamin or mineral you need.

If you think you may need more of any vitamin or mineral, the best way is to consult your doctor. Your doctor may check your blood work results and determine need You more or even less of any vitamin or mineral.
